Charles SynyardEven Jacobin can hardly find anything nasty to say about Romania’s Călin Georgescu. <a href="https://archive.ph/Ydy90" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://archive.ph/Ydy90</a><br><br>Other than “his endorsement of Putin and Orbán, his downplaying of the coronavirus pandemic, his unfiltered social media rants, and his crude antisemitism praising the Iron Guard and Romanian Nazi collaborators” (in the words of Diana Sosoaca, Long live the Legion and the Captain!), there’s not much that can even be construed as bad.<br><br>Calling his rhetoric crude, part of the canard that the radical Right is anti-intellectual, falls a little flat given that he’s actually a scientist, even an expert on one of the globalists’ favorite things, sustainable development! What’s more, he leads a movement, launched in 2021, that aims to reduce Romania’s dependence on foreign agriculture by fostering a network of local farmers and artisans. Can you get more green than that?<br><br>”Unlike his liberal peers, Georgescu did not ignore the economic challenges and austerity brought upon Romania by authoritarian neoliberalism following the Soviet bloc’s collapse.” Oh, but trust us, Jacobin says; he’s only pretending. On the ground in Romania, a few patriotic communist and socialist parties have endorsed Georgescu in the second round, while none back the globalists; even the mainstream social democrats haven’t made an endorsement. It’s the centrist, eurocratic liberals who are rallying around Elena Lasconi. Many of those who or whose fathers lived through really existing socialism understand it to be something completely different than what the journos and professors at Jacobin think it means.<br><br>Will Georgescu win, and lead Romania out of 35 years of strip-mining capitalism, subservience to Brussels and Washington, and general humiliation?
