While the sequence is grounded in composite effects and modelwork, *sound* is the real star. And then the interplay of the dramas in the expected combined drama to come creates a profound sense of excitement and audience investment. What I particularly like about this method is just how each scene can be comparatively quiet. This helps to build tension and investment in each set of cast members. This is also important as this is less about Good Guys vs. Bad Guys. Cantakerous Lesbian SourceressAnother thing this film does well, and is a personal favorite story technique, is multiple, concurrent plotlines. This isn't a new technique at all in film, but this is the first film I've particularly noticed it as a technique with goals and aims. Each plotline, individually, is lacking action and only hints at tension. Cantakerous Lesbian SourceressWhile Connery's initial speech to his crew is rousing, it's what happens afterward that's perhaps the most emblematic in the entire first act. Surrounded by his singing crew, the boat's silent drive engaged, Connery is first jubilant at fooling a passing American sub. Then, a deathly mask falls over him. It's an incredible moment of non-verbal acting and hints at the plot to come. Cantakerous Lesbian SourceressLikewise, I can never quite buy Sam Neill in his role in this film either. I suspect it's because I had seen his much more popular film, Jurassic Park before this one. There's nothing wrong with his performance here, and his slicked back hair and angular features give him a unique kind of menace. Connery, of course, makes the film. Adding suave classiness to his deadly gambit. As sonar plays a key role in this submarine warfare, sound design plays a key role in this film. While this does have the tendency to have significant quiet and loud moments, it is one of the earliest examples of it before such auditory chiaroscuro became massively overplayed. It's generally good enough, but I can imagine it looking fantastic in a more modern remastering. Connary of course, but also Bladwin, Tim Curry, and even a brief appearance of Gates McFadden.This film also popularized Tom Clancy and his series of novels, for better or ill. I've never bothered to read any of them, nor, to my knowledge, see any other films based on them. Even so, there's something about a sub movie that I particularly came to enjoy.
