Charles Synyard<p><span>1/2 “There was the evening star in a pale silvery field of sky just over the tall fir tree that shot up in the very centre of the silver bush. The first star always gave her a thrill. Wouldn't it be lovely if she could fly up to that dark swaying fir-top between the evening star and the darkness?” (14)<br><br>Does is matter that the author had an inner experience of these feelings? Recently read a post by a certain author, whose views I like to consider but frequently disagree with, on the use of AI in composing literature </span><a href="https://voxday" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://voxday</a><span> .net/2025/04/11/ai-vs-organic/ He approves, remarking, “in my opinion, it is absolutely and only the end result that matters.” But then I think he misdirects readers, in framing objections as being over the ease with which AI can produce text—evidently an attempt to link the other side with the discredited Marxist labor theory of value. He ignores that, for instance, in American popular music, the most iconic song origin isn‘t an artist wracking his brain for hours coming up with song lyrics at his desk: it’s a nationwide chart-topper, brimming with feeling, coming of something jotted down on a napkin at a diner. It’s genius. That’s why it’s perfectly acceptable to make a career covering sings by others in implicit homage, but always seen as a little embarrassing if your lyrics were written for you by suits at the record label.<br><br>Just so, as how writing itself happens may be changing, what a timely delight to be reading Pat of Silver Bush (1933) by my favorite author, L. M. Montgomery. Beside my edition is my gorgeous bookmark from the Emily trilogy. Changes are a key theme in this story, as Patricia Gardiner dreads anything that may threaten her cottagecore life at Silver Bush, her family home in Prince Edward Island. The latest in date to join Montgomery’s other series protagonists leads Anne Shirley, the Story Girl, and Emily Byrd Starr, Pat’s world in many respects remains idyllic, but is slowly becoming our own, as automobiles replace horses and store-bought cheese replaces making your own.<br><br>Pat can be highly sentimental, and at first, I wondered if she was even a kindred spirit: in that class of select souls with a richer experience of beauty, filled with romantic longings and often out of step with the world. Is she just a typical girl attached to her home? As the read goes on, though, it becomes clear she sees a different side of reality than those around her.<br><br>A perfectly revelatory passage. Look at how she vs. others see the Whispering Lane that runs between Silver Bush that and a neighboring relations’ farm.<br><br>”Pat went to Swallowfield by the Whispering Lane, which was fringed with birches, also planted by some long-dead bride. The brides of Silver Bush seemed to have made a hobby of planting trees. The path was picked out by big stones which Judy Plum whitewashed as far as the gate; from the gate Aunt Edith did it, because Uncle Tom and Aunt Barbara wouldn't be bothered and she wasn't going to let Judy Plum crow over her. The lane was crossed half way by the gate and beyond it were no birches but dear fence corners full of bracken and lady fern and wild violets and caraway. Pat loved the Whispering Lane. When she was four she had asked Judy Plum if it wasn't the ’way of life’ the minister talked about in church; and somehow ever since it had seemed to her that some beautiful secret hid behind the birches and whispered in the nodding lace of its caraway blossoms.” (23)<br><br>I have known someone whose main impression of Anne of Green Gables is that it’s funny. How? You can see here, what for others is a grounds of contention, boasting or blaming, for Pat is a religious symbol that seems to be hiding something in its bosom. No doubt, an AI program could lay out a similar pair of opposed meanings for a country lane, but would it not be robbing the words of significance, to know that the wordsmith of the passage did not have, could not have consciousness of what the contrast means? Avoid chimeras.<br><br>Favorite of all is the definitive moment when Pat awakens as a kindred spirit. When she is sleeping over at best friend Bets’s house, she wakes in the winter night, and has a profound experience as she gazes upon Silver Bush.<br><br>“A verse she and Bets had learned ‘off by heart,’ in school that day came to her mind:<br><br>”’Come, for the night is cold,<br>And the frosty moonlight fills<br>Hollow and rift and fold<br>Of the eerie Ardise hills.’<br><br>“She repeated it to herself with a strange, deep exquisite thrill of delight, such as she had never felt before… something that went deeper than body or brain and touched some inner sanctum of being of which the child had never been conscious. Perhaps that moment was for Patricia Gardiner the ’soul’s awakening’ of the old picture. All her life she was to look back to it as a sort of milestone… that brief, silvery vigil at the dormer window of the Long House.” (119)<br><br>Beauty as a religious experience. How infinitely this would be cheapened, were the author not one who knew what these words meant! Lifechanging experiences need the testimony of witnesses for the telling. Alas, the author above appears, far from a kindred spirit, a pitiable utilitarian looking to get a certain reaction out of the audience. She paused on tip-toe among the daisies and held out her arms to let the cool fire of that dear and lovely moon bathe her slim child body.“ (122)<br>”’The trouble is, I don't think the things I do are queer,’ said Pat gravely. ’They seem quite reasonable to me.’” (125)<br><br>A most beautiful chapter, with an immortal moment of contradiction. For a while, I had wondered if Patricia Gardiner, the protagonist in Pat of Silver Bush (1933), by L. M. Montgomery, was one of the kindred spirits, or just an average girl who’s unusually sentimental about her childhood home. As we will have seen in the first post, she is definitely shown to be of “the race that knows Joseph” as she grows. But it is only really with Chapter XVII that she comes to experience the painful loneliness these sensitive souls can experience when they are not understood.<br><br>The chapter opens with no ambiguity about what Pat has done. ”Just as naked as the day she was born,” and her relatives are all kinds of horrified (120). But wait, did Lucy Maud Montgomery really write about a lead going naked out of doors? Emily and Ilse were accused of skinny dipping in the sea in the Emily books, but those were false rumors. This time, the thing really happened.<br><br>”More and more that summer of her tenth year, Pat had found herself responsive to the beauty of the world around her. It was becoming a passion with her,” (121). Her innate fondness for nature, evident in her childhood, deepens in her girlhood. On “a summer evening of glamour and enchantment and mystery,” when Silver Bush fixture Judy Plum is away, Pat recalls one of her spellbinding tales…<br><br>“Some strange bewitchment entered Into her and crept along her veins. She remembered a Judy-story of an enchanted princess who had to dance naked in the moonlight every night of full moon in a woodland glen, and a sudden craving possessed her to dance thus in moonlight, too. Why not? There was nobody to see. It would be beautiful... beautiful.” (122)<br><br>What follows is some the finest, intensest, and most delightful of the kind of spiritually-attuned nature writing Montgomery is known for. Creating characters who feel as hers do about natural beauty, it makes sense that eventually one of them is going to try dancing naked in the night. The lovely passage is worth reading in full.<br><br>“Pat disrobed. There was not much to do... she was already bare-legged. Her pale-blue cotton frock and two small undies were cast aside and she stood among the shadows, a small, unashamed dryad, quivering with a strange, hitherto unknown ecstasy as the moon's pale fingers touched her through the trees.<br>”She stepped out among the daisies and began the little dance Bets had taught her. A breeze blew on her through the aisles of the shining birches. If she held up her hands to it wouldn't it take hold of them? A faint, delicious perfume arose from the dew-wet ferns she danced on; somewhere far away laughter was drifting across the night... faint, fairy laughter which seemed to come from the Haunted Spring. She felt as light of being as if she were really made of moonlight. Oh, never had there been such a moment as this! She paused on tip-toe among the daisies and held out her arms to let the cool fire of that dear and lovely moon bathe her slim child-body.” (122)<br><br>The scene—sheer glory—is seemingly represented decently for the readership in the original cover art by Edna Cooke Shoemaker. Her supernal joy is crushed when her Aunt Edith spots her, has her dress, and brought indoors to be shamed and punished.<br><br>Pat’s punishment is highly symbolic. She is “sent to Coventry”, meaning given the silent treatment, in her own home, for a week. While Montgomery saw need to spell out the expression’s meaning, I was familiar with it from the Enid Blyton’s St. Clare’s books, where the girls sometimes mete out the punishment to one of their number to help keep internal order by punishing bad conduct without appealing to authorities. Here, though, the episode reveals that unbeknownst to both Pat and her relations, a wide gap now separates their views of right and wrong.<br><br>“‘How could you, Pat?’ asked mother reproachfully.<br>”’I… I wanted to bathe in the moonlight,’ sobbed Pat. ‘I didn’t think it was any harm. I didn’t think any one would see me.’<br>”’I never heard of any decent child wanting to bathe in the moonlight,’ said Aunt Jessie.<br>“And then Uncle Tom laughed uproariously.” (123)<br><br>Pat, firstly, danced naked in the moonlight as one who was growing to earnestly love the natural world, and sought closeness to it’s beauty, but there is even more to it than that. She didn’t get the romantic notion on her own. Hearing a tale primeval in origin, she felt the same impulse as the mythic princess in the story, and sought to repeat, to make real again what we hear rumor of in the earliest human memories. She feels a poetic imperative to do this unclothed dance from love of beauty. This “hitherto unknown ecstacy” has a touch of the religious, even, of untutored worship by impulse. These are the realized possobilities that make humans special.<br><br>But of all this, Pat’s mother understands nothing, and Aunt Jessie and Uncle Tom less than nothing. Jessie holds in “contempt”, Tom finds “amusing”, anything so wildly impractical and atypical. For them, the only standards are how other people behave and think. They have no experience of inner imperatives that are their own justification. Uncle Tom reminds me of Uncle Roger, a similarly despicable character who was forever treating the youngsters’ notions as a big joke in Montgomery’s The Story Girl. </span><a href="https://gab" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://gab</a><span> .com/CharlesSynyard/posts/110863620717456509<br><br>Thankfully, on Judy’s return she promptly makes the Gardiners lay off the silent treatment. I have mixed feelings on Judy, as she is guilty of telling Pat fibs about where babies come from, about a neighbor woman being a witch, and so forth that give the impression words spoken to children are to be judged by how well they amuse or conveniently misdirect, not by whether they are true or morally right to say. But here, Judy is a stellar support, really a kindred spirit herself. Their exchange in part:<br><br>”’I don't want to be hard on ye, Patsy, but what monkey-didoes have ye been cutting up? It's a fine yarn yer dad has been spinning me av ye dancing in the bush widout inny clothes on.’<br>“‘Oh, Judy, I never saw such a moon... and I was pretending I was a bewitched princess… and it was so beautiful before Aunt Edith came.’<br>”There was some wild strain of poetry in Judy that made her understand. She hugged Pat with a fierce tenderness.<br>”’…There'll be no more visiting in Coventry for ye, me jewel. But ye'd better not be doing any more quare things for awhile.’<br>”’The trouble is, I don't think the things I do are queer,‘ said Pat gravely. ’They seem quite reasonable to me...’<br>“‘Ye niver spoke a truer word... But ye'd better be a bit careful, Patsy, and if ye fale inny more hankering for such bathing just ye tell me and I'll get a pitcherful av moonlight and pour it over ye.’“ (125)<br><br>Amen… amen. Is there not the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount, of the Narrow Gate in all this? The priorities of those who know the Kingdom of God is within them, are foolishness in the eyes of the world.<br><br>In truth, nudity is a sensitive and delicate matter, though. A few words on it in closing. After early childhood, we are expected to clothe, and for good reason. There are some who do feel authentic joy from nakedness out of doors—but the “naturist” (nudist) subculture that caters to them, as well as artistic representations such as the paintings of Matisse deny, distort, or trivialize sexuality and intimacy by encouraging nudity with mixed groups. As an ordinary human being, entering the realm of Monsterdom requires a rigorous determination, and an ego that can survive all manner of taunts, threats and indignation. Humans aren't the only ones who enjoy a spot of tea now and again. Little monsters have been know to slip quietly into kitchens when no one is around and sneak a sip of two of freshly brewed sweetness. Alas, some of these tiny creatures may become so enamored with the tea, that they sip themselves silly and fall into a state of euphoria, causing all manner of behavior.<br>

Baby monsters are even harder to find than the elusive "baby" pigeon. Very few folks can say that they've seen them, let alone created their portraits. I have been lucky. As you might imagine, monster parents can be a bit protective. Mothers in particular. They consider us (humans) more than a bit strange and potentially dangerous. It took most of my free time, lots of monster "treats" and carefully followed Monster Etiquette to befriend just a few of them. Even then, I felt a bit nervous and on edge as I made sketches of their most beloved offspring. It is always a good idea to remind oneself that monsters are ultimately unpredictable creatures, and should be given proper respect at all times.<br>
