Instead of wasting promising tech candidates' time with useless (and often unrealistic) coding problems, offer to pair with them for a couple of hours on an existing project/problem THEY own (under candidate-friendly NDA of course).

Not only will both parties spend less effort (and be more likely to enjoy) this controversial step in the process, but also interviewers will have an opportunity to learn a LOT more about how candidates think and solve problems (and catch out BS/cheating).

Even better: it ALSO tests how candidates handle sharing context with newcomers--something much more relevant long-term than how well they handle writing irrelevant algorithms with no context under stress. #coding #interviews #tech
