I saw some about #Substack is evil, bloggers on Substack are all evil or dupes spreading evil, never look at Substack...
Today I've seen two people with Substacks -- one a Georgetown professor who's had to flee the US with his family to the EU and one a neurodivergent mutual aid community.
Didn't look so evil to me. What gives, Mastodon.
Por motivos de carga de trabajo y salud mental, este viernes no habrá nuevo post en #Substack.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social
Sure it doesn't have anything to do with the fact you still use #Substack?
A platform known for supporting #Nazis?
Because while I love and support your advocacy for #Gaza, I can not in good conscience support anyone that uses Substack as their platform.
Not when there are alternatives that don't provide platforms for Nazis.
Sorry.

@tzimmer_history the notions you hint at in the article seem great, but the article would be even more coherent, cogent, if it were not hosted at #substack, giving clicks and revenue for a corporation that supports and directly funds those who would erase democracy and install their vision of a christianist, racist autocracy.
FWIW. We would love to see it outside of substack.

PSA: Substack is a privacy nightmare
If you give the Substack app access to your contacts, they are permanently copied to their servers with NO way to remove them.
I find the way Substack newsletters operate to be very predatory toward data. First you subscribe to your favorite creator's newsletter to see what they write. Then you see they have a paid post you can unlock for free, so you click the link and it tells you that you need to get the app. You begrudgingly install, and claim your free article, but Wait! You have to verify your phone number, so you put that in, but actually in order for the system to accept it, you MUST allow access to your contacts. It won't let you carry on without doing this.
A bonus bit of shadiness, free subscribers are only allowed to unlock one paid article for a newsletter ever. So yeah, installing the Substack app is a waste of time and space at best, a privacy nightmare at worst. Do NOT allow Substack access to your contacts. Deny on your system's permission prompt.

Lex Roman asks the right question about the current "indie media" moment:
"Are we building independent media or are we building platform-dependent media?"
My answer: if you are using #Substack, you are not actually independent, you are sharecropping for Marc Andreesen on a platform that's trying to co-opt independence.
