Yay! I successfully replaced my #kiln control panel. It finally crapped out after a decade of exposure to constant humidity in Louisiana & Florida.

Wish I could say the same for my a/c unit. It was filled with clay dust & mold. I tried to clean it w/out getting the electrical components wet, but now it won’t turn on. Unlike a #Skutt Kiln, a GE a/c isn’t designed to be maintained. I hate the idea of buying and discarding one every few years but don’t know what else to do. #RightToRepair

My great-grandfather lived through the Great Depression, when the popular saying was:

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

The way things are currently going in the world, many of us are going to have to hold onto our computers and phones much longer than we're used to and figure out how to keep them working.

We're all going to learn just how important Right-To-Repair and free software are.

If you can't install the software you want and replace or upgrade key components, you may be faced with a costly purchase, or have to do without.

Now is the time to figure this out, because it's not going to get easier or cheaper for a while. Probably a long while.

If you don't know where to start, ask Fedi! Lots of super-experienced and knowledgeable people here ready and willing to help guide you.

Windows 10 support ends soon. Millions of perfectly working computers may be scrapped just because they can’t run Win11. It’s absurd. endof10.org encourages people to switch to Linux - and offers volunteers' help. I moved from Windows to Linux in recent years and couldn’t be happier. My favourite old laptop, an affordable model which carried me through years of PhD, now runs like new. If you’re curious to try but nervous, I’m happy to help!

"A new memo from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is calling on defense contractors to grant the Army the right-to-repair. The Wednesday memo is a document about “Army Transformation and Acquisition Reform” that is largely vague but highlights the very real problems with IP constraints that have made it harder for the military to repair damaged equipment.

Hegseth made this clear at the bottom of the memo in a subsection about reform and budget optimization. “The Secretary of the Army shall…identify and propose contract modifications for right to repair provisions where intellectual property constraints limit the Army's ability to conduct maintenance and access the appropriate maintenance tools, software, and technical data—while preserving the intellectual capital of American industry,” it says. “Seek to include right to repair provisions in all existing contracts and also ensure these provisions are included in all new contracts.”

Over the past decade, corporations have made it difficult for people to repair their own stuff and, somehow, the military is no exception. Things are often worse for the Pentagon. Many of the contracts it signs for weapons systems come with decades long support and maintenance clauses. When officials dig into the contracts they’ve often found that contractors are overcharging for basic goods or intentionally building weapons with proprietary parts and then charging the Pentagon exorbitant fees for access to replacements."

404 Media · Army Will Seek Right to Repair Clauses in All Its ContractsA recent memo detailed a future where soldiers can repair their own equipment.

That's an unexpected good decision by this administration.
